Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Who We Are Getting Started RSUs & Equity Compensation Passive Income & Early Retirement Tax - Investments & PropertySelf-Managed Super Funds Cross-Border & Expat Tech ProfessionalsWorking With My Wealth Choice
1. Who does My Wealth Choice specialise in helping?
My Wealth Choice is a financial planning practice built exclusively for tech professionals in Australia. Think software engineers, product managers, engineering leads, data scientists, and tech executives who receive equity compensation such as RSUs and want to convert that wealth into lasting financial independence.
We are not a generalist financial planning firm. Every strategy, process, and conversation we have is designed around the specific financial complexity that comes with a tech career: RSU taxation, concentrated stock risk, high-income tax minimisation, SMSF and different tax efficient structures.
2. Do I need a minimum income or asset level to work with My Wealth Choice?
Yes. We work best with tech professionals who have a combined household income of $250,000 or more, and at least $250,000 in investable assets including superannuation.
This is not about gatekeeping, it is about fit. The strategies we implement (RSU structuring, super contributions, SMSF and trust setup, investment portfolio construction) require a certain income and asset base to generate meaningful results. Below these thresholds, the advice cost relative to the impact is harder to justify, and we would rather be honest about that upfront than have you pay for advice that cannot move the needle for you.
If you are not there yet but are on a clear trajectory – a growing RSU package, a senior role with strong income growth – reach out anyway. We can have a conversation about timing.
3. What makes My Wealth Choice different from other financial advisers?
Four things set us apart:
380+ tech professionals advised over 20+ years. We understand your payslip, your equity schedule, and the anxiety that comes with a large vest hitting at the wrong time. This is not a niche we stumbled into, it is all we do.
Australia’s only 4-Step Tech Wealth Process, a structured, repeatable methodology designed exclusively for tech professionals. No other adviser in Australia uses this framework.
Host of Wealth Bytes. Mo Shouman, our principal adviser is the host of the only podcast and YouTube channel in Australia dedicated to financial planning for tech professionals.
Fee-for-service only. We are paid by you, not by product providers. Our advice is always in your interest. The only exception is personal insurance, where we accept the legislated industry rate under Corporations Law, the same way a mortgage broker receives commission for loan services.
We get results – and we measure them.
Most advice stops at the strategy. We don’t. At My Wealth Choice, we track progress, hold you accountable, and stay hands-on through implementation. You get a dedicated team and a clear financial roadmap, but more importantly, you get outcomes you can see.
Whether it’s boosting savings, reducing tax, investing smarter, or building wealth through property, we’re here to move the dial – not just talk about it.
4. What is the My Wealth Choice 4-Step Tech Wealth Process?
Our 4-Step Process is the structured framework we use with every tech professional client. It was built over 20 years of working exclusively in this space.
Step 1 – Financial Clarity
Before anything else, we need to understand whether we are the right adviser for you and whether your situation is one we can genuinely help with. We have a direct conversation about your income, your RSU schedule, your super balance, your goals, and what financial independence means to you. From there we give you an honest assessment: here is what we can help with, here is what it would involve, and here is whether we think we are a good fit. If we are not the right fit, we will tell you and point you in the right direction. There is no pressure and no obligation. Most people find this conversation clarifying in itself – not because we have all the answers yet, but because the right questions surface things that had been sitting unresolved.
Step 2 – Financial Roadmap
This is where we understand your goals and systems. We need to understand what is important to you, what makes you comfortable and what are the financial projects that will move the needle for you. We will also explain the advice process and expectations from all parties.
Step 3 – Strategy Fit-In
We identify and design the specific strategies that fit your situation: RSU sell-or-hold decisions, tax minimisation structures, super contribution strategies, SMSF setup where appropriate, and investment portfolio construction. Everything is modelled before it is implemented.
Step 4 – Master Plan Presentation
We present your complete, written Statement of Advice. This is your personalised financial plan with specific recommendations, the reasoning behind each one, and detailed modelling showing how the plan works in real numbers. No leaps of faith. You see exactly what will happen and why before anything is done.
5. What outcome do your clients typically achieve?
The goal we work toward with most tech professional clients is $10,000 – $20,000 per month in reliable passive income. That should be enough to cover their lifestyle without depending on an employer, a salary, or the next RSU vest.
This is the income level that creates genuine optionality: the ability to retire early, work on your own terms, take time off, or step away from the job market entirely without financial pressure. Most clients who engage us are 5–15 years away from this goal when we first meet. With the right RSU strategy, tax structure, and investment plan in place, many reach it significantly earlier than they expected.
6. Is My Wealth Choice right for me?
My Wealth Choice is the right fit if you are a tech professional in Australia who:
Earns $250,000+ household income and holds at least $250,000 in investable assets including super
Receives RSUs, ESS, or other equity compensation as part of your package
Wants to retire early or achieve financial independence – not just ‘retire at 67’
Feels like you earn well but are not building wealth fast enough
Has concerns about job security, tech sector layoffs, or being dependent on one employer
Feels like they had enough doing sporadic and random actions regarding their money.
We are a specialist practice. If you are looking for a general financial planner, we will refer you to the right people. If you are a tech professional who wants the clearest path to financial independence, this is where you belong.
7. Is there real evidence that financial advice makes a difference?
Yes and the research is clear. Russell Investments found that advisers added 5.9% per annum in value to their clients. Morningstar’s landmark study found that better financial decision-making can create an average of 29% more income in the long term. Insignia Financial found that 90% of clients who see an adviser say it left them in a better financial position, with 88% reporting less financial stress.
For tech professionals specifically, the value compounds faster because the decisions around RSU vesting, tax structuring, and investment timing are higher stakes and more time-sensitive than most people’s financial situations. A single well-timed RSU decision or carry-forward super contribution can represent $30,000 – $80,000 in real savings. That is not theoretical. We see it regularly.
I don’t want to be sold products. Is your advice linked to a product?
No. We’re not aligned to any product providers, banks, or super funds.
You pay us directly for advice. That means we’re focused purely on what’s right for you, not what pays us. It’s strategic, transparent, and tailored to your goals not someone else’s sales target.
8. What is your 30-day happiness guarantee?
Simple: if you engage us and within the first 30 days you're not completely satisfied – for any reason – we'll refund your fee in full. No questions asked, no awkward conversations, no fine print.
We introduced this because we know that choosing a financial adviser is a significant decision, and trust takes time to build. The guarantee removes the risk from your side of the table. You can engage us, go through the discovery process, start seeing how we work, and decide with confidence – knowing that if it doesn't feel right, you're not locked in.
Most of our clients tell us they knew within the first session whether we were the right fit. The 30-day window simply formalises that and puts our money where our mouth is.
9. What’s the catch? Sounds too good to be true.
No catch – just a fixed-fee service designed to deliver real results.
We don’t do lock-ins, or cookie-cutter advice. You get a fixed-term, 12-month engagement with a team who cares about your outcomes.
Our process is clear. The pricing is transparent. And the results speak for themselves – most clients choose to stick around because they’re actually getting ahead.
